Sometimes, the old needs to make way for the new. That’s why exfoliating your face is an essential step in your skincare routine. It’s no coincidence that our Scrub & Shine is a core part of Mothr Earth Proof's 4-step routine. But what exactly is exfoliating, and how does it help your skin reach its full potential? We’re happy to explain.

What is exfoliating?

Your skin is constantly active, always creating new skin cells. Old cells die off and make room for these new, healthy cells. By exfoliating, you support this natural skin renewal process. An exfoliant helps loosen the old skin cells from the surface. The result is radiant skin with fresh cells. Without this extra help, old skin cells can build up, leading to clogged pores, blackheads, dryness, and a rougher skin texture.

The benefits of exfoliating

Every day, you need rest, self-care, and good nutrition. The same goes for your skin. That’s why exfoliating is the essential first step in your daily skincare routine. What benefits does exfoliating offer?
  • A soft, cared-for feeling and a fresh appearance
  • Fewer impurities due to reduced clogging
  • A more even skin tone
  • Better absorption of other skincare products

What is an exfoliant?

An exfoliant is the product used to loosen old skin cells from the surface. There are different types of exfoliants, mainly categorized as chemical and physical exfoliants.

Chemical exfoliating

Chemical exfoliating uses acids. Products with BHA and AHA are well-known examples of acids that work to detach dead skin cells. The idea behind a chemical exfoliant is that the acids penetrate the skin, breaking down dead skin cells from within. However, a risk with chemical peels is that they may be too concentrated. With daily use or exposure to the sun, there's a risk that your skin might become irritated.

Physical exfoliating

Physical exfoliating uses gentle granules or a mild brush to remove skin cells. For instance, you can scrub your face with sugar, a facial brush, or a scrub glove. Your skin deserves a gentle approach, so it’s important to exfoliate softly. Combining physical exfoliating particles with nourishing oils and soothing ingredients can help, as seen in our Scrub & Shine.

Can you exfoliate too much?

Your skin is precious to you. You only have one, so you naturally want to treat it carefully. Exfoliating supports natural processes, but is it okay to do this daily? It all depends on the products you use. Only mild products are suitable for daily use; they should contain no harsh chemicals and ideally be enriched with soothing ingredients.

"It's essential to listen to your skin. Your body provides clear signals if you're scrubbing too hard or too often. Experiencing redness or irritation? That’s a sign to slow down. Exfoliating should support and respect your skin’s natural rhythm."
